In addition to representing the United States, Hamm played for the Washington Freedom of the Women’s United Soccer Association from 2001-2003. In 2004, Hamm and former teammate Michele Akers were named to the FIFA 100, which honored the greatest 125 living soccer players from around the world, and were the only two Americans and women on the list. She was also the first female inductee of the World Football Hall of Fame. Hamm has additionally been inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame, Texas Sports Hall of Fame, Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, North Carolina Soccer Hall of Fame and National Women’s Hall of Fame. She won three ESPY’s, including Female Athlete of the year and Soccer Player of the Year, and was twice named Female Athlete of the Year by the Women’s Sports Foundation. One of the most celebrated women’s soccer players ever, Hamm two-times was named FIFA World Player of the Year and five times U.S. national team members in career assists with 144 and third in international caps with 276. Hamm ranked first all-time as of 2021 among U.S. Her 158 goals during international competition were the most-ever by a male or female at the time of Hamm’s retirement in 2004 (the mark was later broken by Abby Wambach). Women’s National Team from 1987-2004, Hamm won two FIFA World Cups in 19 and two Olympic gold medals in 19. One of the greatest female soccer players ever, Mia Hamm played an integral role in popularizing the sport in the United States.
